How to organize a pickleball tournament: courts, divisions and match time
A practical club-event checklist: fixed or rotating partners, divisions, scoring, court capacity, registration and a plan for delays.
1. Decide what players are signing up for
Choose singles, fixed doubles or a social session with changing partners. State the expected number of matches and whether there is a playoff. For a first club event, a small fixed-team pool is easier to explain than several overlapping draws. Decide whether the event is recreational or sanctioned before opening registration.
2. Define divisions and scoring in writing
Publish eligibility, partner requirements, the entry deadline, cancellation terms and the score format. For a recreational pool, one game to 11 with a two-point margin is a possible club rule. Sanctioned formats have specific conditions, so consult USA Pickleball's current rules instead of assuming that every game-to-11 event qualifies. Say who records results and how disputes are handled.
3. Count matches before taking entries
Eight fixed doubles teams in two pools of four produce 12 pool matches, three per team. Four courts allow three theoretical waves. At an assumed 25 minutes per match plus five for changeover, that is 90 minutes of pool court time, before check-in, rest, playoffs and delays. This is a capacity estimate, not a guarantee. Uneven match lengths and player rest can require more waves.
4. Publish one schedule players can find
Collect names, partners and any availability you need. Add the courts and their available hours in FenixPlay, generate the matches and review the schedule. Share the event link. Give players a check-in time and one place to look for updates; avoid treating a screenshot of yesterday's schedule as the live version.
5. Prepare the desk for the day
Name the person who enters results and the person who decides delays, withdrawals and disputed scores. Have a weather plan and a way to communicate court changes. Confirm any rating-submission process separately: FenixPlay does not automatically submit to DUPR. After the event, check the final results before announcing the winners.
Bring registrations, matchups, court times and results into one app. FenixPlay's shared tournament tools work for local pickleball events: set up singles or doubles, name your divisions and choose your competition format. Your players follow the published schedule and results from their phones.
