Pickleball round robin: matches, rotations and a court schedule
Work out a fixed-team pickleball round robin with four, six or eight teams. Match counts, an example schedule, odd-team byes and rotating partners explained.
Fixed teams or changing partners?
In a fixed-team round robin, each team meets every other team once. Four doubles teams means eight players and six matches. Changing partners after every round is a social rotation, not the same draw. Use groups in FenixPlay for fixed teams; Americana is the separate option for partner rotation. Tell players which version they are entering.
Count the matches and rounds
For n teams, a single round robin needs n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 matches. Four teams need six matches, six need 15, and eight need 28. Every team plays n − 1 times. With enough courts, an even number of teams needs n − 1 rounds; an odd number needs n rounds with one bye per team. Fewer courts and rest requirements increase the number of time slots.
A complete four-team example
Call the teams A, B, C and D. Round 1: A–D on court 1 and B–C on court 2. Round 2: A–C and D–B. Round 3: A–B and C–D. Every pairing appears once and no team plays on two courts at once. The table below is a planning example with assumed 30-minute slots, including changeover. Insert additional rest or buffers when needed.
| Schedule | Court 1 | Court 2 |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | A–D | B–C |
| 09:30 | A–C | D–B |
| 10:00 | A–B | C–D |
Set scoring and ties before the first serve
State the game target, winning margin and how standings ties are decided. For sanctioned events, check USA Pickleball's current approved formats and tie-break requirements. Configure the group points and review the final ordering in the app against your published event rules; do not assume a generic group table enforces every governing-body rule.
When a round robin gets too big
Sixteen teams in one pool create 120 matches. Four pools of four create 24 pool matches, but each team now meets only three opponents. If you add a knockout stage, count those matches too. Set the number of qualifiers and any consolation matches before registration. Smaller pools can make a club afternoon workable without promising that every team meets everyone.
Bring registrations, matchups, court times and results into one app. FenixPlay's shared tournament tools work for local pickleball events: set up singles or doubles, name your divisions and choose your competition format. Your players follow the published schedule and results from their phones.
